Small vertical steam engine

Made:
London

Small vertical steam engine with dog crank 4" dia. by 4.5" stroke by the Thames Ironworks Company.

This is a compact form of direct-acting engine in which a connecting-rod is dispensed with, the piston-rod being directly connected with the crankpin by a block sliding in a transverse slot formed in the crosshead. This arrangement is sometimes known as a 'dog-crank', and it has been much used for feed pumps. It was built by the Thames Ironworks Company, based in East London, long-estabilshed shipbuilders and civil engineers.
