Armington-Sims high speed horizontal steam engine, no. 80, 1888

This is an example of a high-speed horizontal engine of American design, built under licence in the UK. Such designs were driven by the requirements of electricity generating sets. These required much higher operating speeeds than the 70-80 revolutions per minute achieved by earlier engine dsigns with relatively log strokes. This engine had a short stroke, and a very precisely-operating governor, close control of the operating speed being essential to keep the electrical output of the generating set constant.
