Working model of Willan's central valve high speed steam engine, sectioned, with Crompton dynamo, scale 1:4, Willans and Robinson Limited, Rugby, Warwickshire, England, 1901

This type of engine was patented by Mr. P. W. Willans in 1884. With subsequent modifications it was extensively adopted for the direct driving of dynamos to generate electricity. The engine design thus played an important part in the early history of electricity generation, before the advent of the steam turbine.
