Model, scale 1:8, of an Undertype compound steam engine and boiler, on wooden base.

This high-pressure two-stage expansion engine with boiler is a type that is self-contained, compact and only requires slight foundations, so that it was much used around the world. The 'undertype' name derives from the engine itself being positioned beneath the boiler, allowing for the compact design.
