Collotype view of steam turbine plant, Lots Road Power Station

Collotype view of steam turbine plant, Lots Road Power Station

This view shows the internal construction of one of eight steam turbines which were built by Messrs. C. A. Parsons & Co., in 1909-10, for the Chelsea Power Station of the London Underground Electric Railways Co. at Lots Road. These large turbines are now made with two separate casings, each with its own shaft and rotor, the shafts being in line and connected together by flexible claw couplings. This system enables each part of the turbine to have a short stiff shaft, reduces the size of the individual castings, and minimises the risk of distortion of the casings.
