McNaughts' steam engine indicator 0.5 sq. ins. made by Messrs. Chadburn Bros. in wood case
An engine indicator is used to determine the steam pressure inside a steam cylinder during its working cycle, and can be used to assess the engine's performance and efficiency. This is one of three examples of early indicators, made by Messrs. Chadburn Bros., of the improved form introduced by Mr. J. McNaught about 1825-30, in which by the substitution of a drum in place of the flat board for carrying the paper, serious practical difficulties were avoided.
