Model of two egg-ended boilers in setting

Model of two egg-ended boilers in setting, with chimney.

These were formerly part of the large model of the self-acting incline at Upleatham. The type of boiler shown remained in use later than the wagon boiler, when the increase in steam pressures rendered flat and badly stayed surfaces dangerous. It consists of a cylindrical shell with hemispherical ends, and is fixed over a grate formed in a brickwork setting, leaving flues for the passage of the flame and gases round the boiler on their way to the chimney.
