Corrugated fire box by Richard Garrett & Sons
Corrugated fire box by Richard Garrett & Sons, 1876
The firebox end of a small boiler of the locomotive type is shown. The outer sheet of the firebox has been sectioned to show the construction. The feature of the firebox, introduced by Messrs. Garrett in 1876, is the means by which the roof is prevented from collapsing under internal pressure. The usual flat boiler roof and girder stays are dispensed with. The crown sheet is corrugated longitudinally and also has a camber in a direction at right angles to the corrugations given to it, giving it considerable strength and stiffness.
