Porcelain bowl, retrieved from Hiroshima after the atomic bomb explosion, unsigned, Japan, August 1945
The atomic bomb that was detonated over the Japanese city of Hiroshima killed almost 80,000 people directly; the radioactive contamination it left behind killed an estimated 60,000 more.
This porcelain bowl was found among the ruins of the city. As a result of the heat of the explosion, the glaze melted and sand and stones became embedded in it.
