BP Solar's Pyramid of the Future Solar Showcase, 1:50 scale architect's model.

This is a model of BP Solar's Pyramid of the Future. It is a contemporary example of architectural design driven purely by the needs of energy-efficiency, towards creating an environmentally-sustainable future. The angled roof is a solar panel array which converts daylight into electricity. The 15kW peak solar system powers the domestic lighting, heating and all the electronic equipment including computers, fax, video and television. The building is grid-connected for exporting power during the day, and importing at night. It uses Pilkington 'K' energy-saving glass, and a pebble bed under the floor stores unused heat in winter, and cools the building in summer by passing cold air over the pebbles the night before. This 1:50 scale architect's model was made for the designers, Arup Associates, by Robert Kirkman & Associates.

Designers: Arup Associates. James Burland - Architect. Tony Broomhead - Structural Engineer. Mike Beaven - Environmental Engineer.
