Travel Guide, London & North Eastern Railway, "On Either Side. Depicting & Describing Features of Interest to be seen from the train between London (Kings Cross) & Edinburgh (Waverley)", 1939, route notes with photographs & map, soft cover with illustration by Frank Newbould. Comprises a lineal map of the railway with descriptive text and photographs of features along the route. Printed by Ben Johnson & Co Ltd of York. This edition was issued in about 1946 with a gummed label on the cover detailing changes to pre-Second World War services.
London & North Eastern Railway 'On Either Side' travel guide, describing features of interest along railway lines between London Kings Cross station and Scotland. This guide illustrates historical and geographical features from London to Edinburgh Waverley station, Fort William, Inverness and Aberdeen. The railway is depicted as a continuous line accompanied by photographs, maps and text. The guide includes the route mileage and railway features such as stations, tunnels and viaducts.
The cover features illustrations by Frank Newbould of an A4 class steam locomotive, St Paul's Cathedral in London, Edinburgh Castle, York Minster and a Scottish baronial castle. Newbould was a prolific artist and illustrator, who produced many posters for the LNER and other railway companies.
The guide was first issued in 1939 as number eleven in a series. This version was sold for one shilling (5p) in the years immediately after the Second World War. A gummed label on the cover notes that some of the pre-war rail services described in the guide were no longer available.
