Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, revised (WISC-R); consisting of a battery of subtest items; revised British version published by NFER Publishing in 1976; used by the Department of Psychology, Alder Hey Hospital, Liverpool, c. 1976-2000.

American psychologist David Wechsler (1896-1981) was the author of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children. He described it as a device for ‘assessing an individual’s potential for purposeful and useful behaviour.’ It includes test items such as arithmetic problems, picture completion and project assembly tests. This revised British version was published by the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) in 1976. It was used by the Department of Psychology at Alder Hey Hospital, Liverpool, between 1976 and 2000. The ‘WISC’ proved one of the 20th century’s most enduring intelligence tests.
