Gunner's quadrant
This instrument consists of a quadrant on a heavy brass arm of square cross section. It was placed inside the mouth of a cannon, the moveable arm carrying the spirit level was set to the horizontal, and the elevation of the cannon was read on the scale. It has a vernier scale which allows an accuracy of five minutes of arc.
