The first scientific tide recordings were measured using instruments developed in the UK in 1831 with Henry Palmer's tide gauge being the first practical example of a self-recording machine. Since 1833 the UK Admiralty has maintained continuous records of tides across the globe, but especially of the coastal tides of the British Isles.
