Part of Graf gravity meter
Part of a gravimeter built between 1938 and 1957, possibly built Askania Werke in Berlin, based on a design by Anton Graf.
More
Gravimeters are scientific instruments which use an extremely sensitive weighing device to measure the strength of gravitational waves. Changes in gravity are measured by weighing and re-weighing the same object in repetition, observing minute changes in the object’s weight when under slightly more or less gravity.
A common use of sea gravimeters was to prospect for undersea oil fields on submarines, which started to become more common from the 1930s onwards, in particular in the immediate post-war period.
This example is a model of sea gravimeter, possibly a prototype, designed by Professor Anton Graf who, under the employ of Askania Werke in Berlin, developed the first sea gravimeters in 1938. Anton Graf would later introduce an improved model of sea gravimeter in 1957.
