Cup anemometer with three cups, Robinson type, made by R. W. Munro, Tottenham N15, London, England, UK, 1926-1932. Designed by meteorologist John Patterson for the Canadian Meteorological Office.

The rate at which the cups of an anemometer spin provide an approximation of wind speed. The Irish astronomer and physicist Thomas Romney Robinson designed a hemispherical cup anemometer in 1846, upon which this design is based. Though some Robinson-type anemometers have four cups, tests showed versions with three cups provided more reliable readings due to the more consistent torque throughout the rotation.
