Marine thermometer made by Negretti and Zambra, London, UK, c. 1890. Marked ‘B.T. [Board of Trade] 4208’.

Marine thermometers were used to measure the temperature of seawater samples collected using buckets from ships. Historic records of sea surface temperature dating back to the 1800s have accrued renewed significance today for scientists studying climate change. The oceans play a hugely significant role in Earth systems, and sea temperature records provide valuable evidence of how climate is changing.
