This apparatus was built in the 1960s for the TSR2 aircraft project, and was Britain's first attempt to use gyroscopes to provide a steady reference platform against which the aircraft's movements could be measured. A stable platform is the essential ingredient for the construction of a totally enclosed intertial navigation system.
