Electrotype replica of a 16th-century mariner’s astrolabe
Electrotype replica of Mariner's astrolabe (Inv. No. 1876-1032), unsigned, European (Spanish?), 1580-1588. Original instrument found in 1845 under a rock on Valentia Island, southern Ireland close to where three vessels from the Spanish Armada floundered in 1588. Made by Elkington & Co. Ltd, London in 1930 when the original was transferred to the newly established National Maritime Museum, Greenwich.
