Marine compass, patt.20, no.41954

This compass and binnacle were designed by Dent in 1892 and became the standard type of Naval Boat compass until World War One.

The compass is liquid, with a hollow verge ring to allow for the liquid to change volume. It is weighted below the bowl to increase stability.

The bowl and gimbal ring can be clamped when the binnacle is being carried. The ring bolts on the sides are used to secure the binnacle to the boat.
