Experimental quintant by an unknown, probably English maker, about 1890. Anodized brass tulip-pattern frame, polished limb, no handle. Not signed, no marks. Inlaid silver scale from -5° to 175° every 10', measuring to 175°. Silver vernier to 10". The tangent screw, working against a spring-loaded stop, and the clamping screw are on there back of the index arm. Two shades (blue and red); no horizon shades. Index- and horizon-glass adjustment by screws. Magnifier (single lens) on a 48 mm swivelling arm. Telescope bracket without adjustment; a fixed telescope (133 mm) erect image, large objective. Several parts are missing. No box.
This appears to be an experimental instrument that can be used as a regular quintant. It was not possible to establish special functions of the instrument, as crucial parts are missing or incomplete. It was probably debveloped by S.G. Brown, the donor.
