Octant made by Henry Hughes, London, about 1860. Ebony frame and limb with a brass index arm and fittings and a wooden handle; an inlaid ivory plate in the crossbar. Signed on the inlaid plate: Hughes London. The inlaid (ivory) scale and the vernier are missing. The tangent screw and clamping screw (missing) are on the back of the index arm. Three shades (two red, one is missing); three horizon shades (two red, one green). Index-glass adjustment by screw; adjustment of the horizon glass by screw, lever, worm gear (knob missing) and a milled clamping screw. The sight vane or telescope bracket is missing. The three feet are missing from the back of the frame. No telescopes or other parts, no box.
