Circular Section for Refracting Telescope.
Circular section for a refracting telescope of 3 3/4 inch aperture and 5-foot focal length on English type equatorial mounting.
Additional telescope pieces alongside main cylindrical section. Comprising mainly of various metal components including spirit level, adjustment handle, measuring microscope and metal tin for the 4 ½” lens.
The telescope was built in 1797 for Captain Huddart, Highbury, London with optics by Peter & John Dollond and mounting by Troughton. In 1816 it was acquired by Sir James South who used it with Sir John Herschel to observe double stars.
