The south facing, 8-foot mural quadrant with hinged counterposied weight for the telescope, from the Radcliffe Observatory, Oxford. Made by John Bird in 1772.
This 8-foot mural quadrant was one of the first two meridan instruments installed at the newly founded Radcliffe Observatory, Oxford, in 1772. It was used by Dr. Hornsby, the first Radcliffe Observer and Official Astronomer. It was acquired for its association with the Radcliffe Observatory. The matching north mural quadrant went to the Museum for the History of Science in Oxford.
