Splitting atoms through nuclear fission produces hazardous radioactive waste. This waste must be stored for thousands of years, though some can be reprocessed by separating out the plutonium and uranium for reuse in fuel.

This quarter-section sample includes a real canister and concrete as used at the Sellafield nuclear site in the UK to encapsulate the waste. The sliced fuel rods contained within the mix are safe to display as they have not been used in a reactor.
