Horace Dall (1901–1986) was an engineer and amateur astronomer and microscopist. He made and designed optical instruments in his spare time, and was recognised for his work in solar, lunar and planetary photography. He made this telescope to order in the 1930s; his extensive correspondence with the first owner of the telescope, a Reverend J. Coulter, was also passed to the Science Museum when the telescope was acquired in the 1990s.
