Scales & weights for the use of money changers, German 1653, in carved wooden box, 43 weights in all [15+4+10+14]

This equal-arm balance was used for checking the purity of gold coins. The weight of a suspect coin is balanced against special weights equivalent to coin being tested. The set of scales contains weights for most of the gold coins in circulation at this time in Western Europe.
