Elizabeth's Exchequer "End" standard yard, (rectangular bronze bar, broken and repaired)
This Yard rule was made at the command of Elizabeth, I, Queen of England (1533-1603), to act as an Exchequer standard of length. Copies of the rule were issued to the various boroughs around England to enforce and encourage true measure in trade and commerce. This standard was so successful that it was not superseded until 1824 when new more accurate measures were required by the statute the Imperial Measures Act.
