Two 36-drawer wooden cabinets: one with drawers numbered 1 to 36 and the other with drawers numbered 37 to 72, plus weights from the Viscount Castlereagh Collection for Alicante, Spain, including a set of 8 brass nested cup weights for the Mark of Alicante & 7 square brass grain weights comprising 12 gn, 9 gn, 6 gn, 4 gn, 2 gn, 1 gn, and two folded pieces of paper: one of which is inscribed with ‘Alicante’, plus a sycamore (wood) case with lid for carrying the weights, unsigned, Alicante, Valencia, Spain, 1815-1818; various documents relating to the weights.
Set of brass nested cup weights with box and a selection square grain weights used for general weighing in the district of Alicante in Spain. These weights were collected in 1818 from the local market of the area through the agency of the British consulate in the district. These weights along with examples from throughout the world were collected at the behest of the British foreign secretary, Viscount Castlereagh. Their values were then determined so that a list of foreign measures could be published as an aid to British merchants trading throughout the world.
