Scottish "Ell-Wand", dated 1668 inscribed for the Burgh of Kirkwall, Orkneys. Round rosewood rod with 1/26th divisions, capped in brass each end, 37 3/8-inch overall by 1 1/8-inch diameter rod. The Scottish Ell is derived from the length of three Rhine feet (3x12.356=37.068-inches or 941.4mm ) but was abolished in 1835 in favour of the Imperial Standard Yard.
