John Murphy developed the idea in 1858-9 with a bridge substituting pins of wrought iron for the cast trunnions. The design was used for railway bridges and influenced Mikael Pedersen when constructing bicycle frames (see Dursley-Pedersen bikes in L4 Hangar)
