Compendium rule signed Humfrey Cole

Compendium rule made by Humfrey Cole in 1574, London. It is signed 'Humfrey Cole 1574'. The instrument consists of two folding arms, each of which are engraved with scales for measuring and making calculations.

Compendium rules are often referred to as 'folding rules' or 'carpenters' rules.' This rule is of the 12 inch, two fold variety and can be used as a sundial, to calculate board measures and for surveying. Humfrey Cole (active 1568-1590) was one of the first English-born mathematical instrument makers. He was also a goldsmith and engraver of maps and book plates and moved to London from the north of England. His workshop was located near St Paul's Cathedral and he also worked at the Royal Mint at the Tower of London.
