Brass Burstow's patent Ellipsograph by W.F.Stanley, London
This instrument, patented by architect Edward Burstow in 1871, draws ellipses by means of a combination of circular with rectilinear motion. In this instance wheel and chain gearing are employed for effecting the combination, and the instrument will produce an ellipse in either direction to the axis.
