Seven drawings by S. J. Newton mounted on card, quarto
These patterns were deposited at the Museum in 1964. Little is known about the maker except that he was a coal merchant from the East End of London. The lines join dots which are placed at equal distances around the circumference of a circle. While the individual lines are straight, groups of them create the appearance of spirals and circles which stand out when each drawing is viewed as a whole. The then curator wrote that constructing them would ‘provide an occupation for somebody who wished to exercise patience, accuracy and care’.
