Twelve-inch wooden slide rule with two slides made by Isaac Carver, London, 1689.
Excise duty was charged on ales, wines and spirits and it was necessary for the excise officer to estimate the content of partially filled casks of all shapes and sizes, a complex task. Thomas Everard published a description of a slide rule for this in 1684 entitled 'Stereometry made easie; or the Description and Use of a new Gauging-Rod or Sliding Rule'. The rule is 12 inches long. ¾ inch broad and nearly 5/8 inch thick. Isaac Carver was the first maker of these rules.
