Model of Pruteen Plant Fermenter area, one of two parts. Labelled "G1 - Fermenter area". This is the bottom half of the fermenter area.
This is an engineering model of one of the world’s largest ever fermenters, which stood at 60 meters tall. The fermenter was built by Imperial Chemical Industries in a hugely ambitious venture to make protein by fermenting microbes. Pruteen was a technical success, but a commercial failure. The technology was instead adapted to make vegetarian protein for humans – ‘Quorn’.
Model of Pruteen Plant Fermenter area, one of two parts. Labelled "G2 - Fermenter area". This is the top half of the fermenter area.

Model of Pruteen Plant, area adjacent to fermenter area. Labelled "H1 - adjacent to fermenter area"
Model of Pruteen Plant, area adjacent to fermenter area. Labelled "H2 - adjacent to fermenter area".
Architectural/ builder's model of the complete ICI Pruteen Plant at Billingham, Stockton on Tees, England, 1978-1983
This is an engineering model of one of the world’s largest ever fermenter factories. It was built by John Brown Engineers and Constructors for Imperial Chemical Industries in a hugely ambitious venture to make protein by fermenting microbes. Pruteen was a technical success, but a commercial failure. The technology was instead adapted to make vegetarian protein for humans – ‘Quorn’.
