Model (scale 1:8) of pumping engine for hydraulic pressure, by Armstrong, Whitworth & Co. Ltd., Newcastle, 1899

This is a simple horizontal rotative steam pumping engine for hydraulic power transmission. A single steam cylinder drives a plunger pump and a pair of heavy flywheels via twin connectin rods. Sir William Armstrong was a pioneer of hydraulic machinery, and his company manufactured considerable numbers of engines like this, before the widespread availability of electricity distribution grids.
