Closed Intel 8008 microprocessor chip, made by the Intel Corporation, United States, 1972-1977.

The 8008 was the world's first 8-bit microprocessor, and was released in April 1972. It was originally commissioned by the Computer Terminal Corporation, but after CTC went with a different supplier, Intel were able to market it on their own. Although it only had moderate success, it helped Intel to gain visibility as a microchip manufacturer, and used this foundation to help the launch of the 8080.
