Painting, Interior of a Rolling Mill; [Interior of a rolling mill] attributed to Godfrey Sykes, c.1860. Oil on canvas; [sight] 100 x 125cm in gilt frame 134x159x8cm. Unsigned. Although this was also attributed to W. Stevenson of Sheffield (fl. 187-), an oil of this title exhibited at the Institution of Civil Engineers, London, in 1871, was attributed to Sykes by Mark Firth of Thomas Firth and Sons, Sheffield, a company renowned for ordnance steel manufacture. This shows the interior of a rolling mill (steel-working), lit by the glow of an ingot emerging from the rollers, the scene depicting works machinery, tools and workmen.
