Painting. Samuel Crompton 1753-1827 / nd [c1857?]. Oil on canvas; image 30x24.75"/76x63cm oval, on unstretched canvas [neatened to] 40x30.5"/102x78cm. Copy of the original oil by Charles Allingham c1800, then in the possession of Mrs John Kennedy, Manchester (and previously loaned for copying to Agnews and, c1857, to Thomas Bazley following John Kennedy's death in 1855). Perhaps one of the sources for Thomas Oldham Barlow's engraving of Crompton, inv.1980-840/3. Portrait, HS to R, head resting on r. hand

This is a copy after an original by Charles Allingham then in the possession of Mrs John Kennedy. This copy was sent to South Kensington by Sir Thomas Bazley along with another painting (1858-78), a copy after Wright of Derby’s portrait of Richard Arkwright. It is unclear if these two copies sent by Bazley, 1858-77 and 1858-78, were painted by the same artist.

There is another copy of the Allingham original in the SMG Collection (1903-229).
