Print, mezzotint. I. RAMSDEN, OPTICIAN TO HIS MAJESTY [ie, Jesse Ramsden, 1738-1800]. / Painted by R. Home; Engraved by John Jones. [2nd state?]. [London: Colnaghi & Co, 1791?]. trimmed to 49.4x35.5cm. Portrait, TQL to left seated, holding rule in left hand; right hand holding compasses over dividing engine. Background, altitude and ozimuth circle Ramsden built for astronomer Giuseppe Piazzi to latter's design (with some innovations) by August 1789 for new observatory at Palermo; represented in fur coat to commemorate a commission for instruments for Empress of Russia, although sitter displeased as never wore such clothing
