Painting by Gilbert Daykin, 1886-1939. "The Results of Labour", 1930-1939. Oil on board, 60x50cm in frame 73x62.5x7.5cm. Design for a poster for the Staveley Coal and Iron Company at the time of increased coal prices. A smiling miner looks appealingly to the viewer, and offers the results of his labour. Several different versions were painted and printed, among various ventures to offset the fall in coal sales. The neat steel supports and general atmosphere are a contrast to the reality of working underground.

Daykin worked as a miner at a pit near Sheffield and he produced a number of vivid artworks showing what the physical work of a coal miner was like down the pit. Sadly he was killed in 1939 in a mine shaft accident. Eleven artworks by Daykin were gifted by his family to the Science Museum in 1978.
