Engravings: Astrological Tables, set of three each circular with opening superimposed layers depicting elements humours in man and relation to natural world, keyed with symbols to cosmic world, [c.178-?]
Engravings such as these three show the importance of astrology in medical traditions. ‘The First Table’ shows a globe with the astrological symbols superimposed upon it. Another depicts man in relation to the natural world with the humours drawn upon his body. The images illustrate the belief the planets influenced the body and the humours. Humours had to be balanced to maintain health. Practices such as purging and cupping restored balance. It was also believed the positioning of the planets determined the opportune time for treatment.
