Painting, ['The disputed distance, Newcastle pitmen at quoits'], / by Henry Perlee Parker, [c1836]. Oil on canvas, 77x64cm in decorative gilt frame, 100x87x8.5cm. Preparatory sketch, possibly for a version in Ironbridge Gorge Museum [possibly that exhibited Royal Academy 1836, cat 224] or another dated 1840 in the Laing Art Gallery Newcastle; one of several versions worked on theme of local north east mining community and pitmen at play between 1836 and 1840. Two miners play quoits at a mine entrance lit by brazier hanging above, watched by a third who has probably come off shift in his mining garb with tools slung on his back, lamp hung on cloth around neck, a small dog sitting behind him. Another miner's lamp lies on ground left. Mother and children observe, miner and one child upon white pit horse blinkered on right, another miner watches; landscape to left of scene.
