1:32 model of Collycroft Worsted textile mill
- maker:
- Philip Veale
1:32 scale model of a typical 18th century water-powered textile mill. The model is based on drawings of the Collycroft Worsted Mill, Bedworth, Warwickshire, England as it was in c.1790.
There is a bell tower on the roof of the model and the front features a large cut away section, allowing the interior to be viewed. The inside contains a selection of textile machines employed in various processes; weaving, winding, drawing or doubling, and spinning. The people operating the machines are also visible within the model.
The Collycroft textile mill, also known as Bedworth Mill, was built in about 1790. The lease of the land, as well as bricks, timber and lime for the building were provided by Sir Rodger Newdigate, of Arbury, Warwickshire. It was located just to the North of Collycroft in Warwickshire.
This model made by Mr Philip Veale in 1977 represents the mill in this late 18th century period. It was intended to only be viewed from the front.
The local canal system and a small nearby stream moved the waterwheel below the mill which powered the machinery. The mill produced worsted, a type of wool yarn, named after the location of its original manufacture in the 12th century in Worsted, Norfolk. However, in the 19th century the mill was converted to silk production. The building was decommissioned in the 1950s during redevelopment of the land.
