British war medal 1914-1918, without ribbon, awarded to Private J.S. Munro R.A.M.C., B.M. artist, English, 1918; The British War Medal, 1914-1918 was instituted on 26 July 1919. Awarded to officers and men who served between 5 August 1914 and 11 November 1918 inclusive. 36 mm diameter. The obverse depicts the head of King George V and is inscribed GEORGIVS V BRITT: OMN: REX ET IND. IMP: [George 5th, King of all the Britons, and Emperor of India] . Approximately 6.4 million silver medals were issued. The reverse is inscibed 1914 1918 and shows Saint George on horseback armed with a short sword, the horse trampling the Prussian shield, skull and crossbones, the sun of victory in the sky. The name of the recipient was stamped on the edge. The suspender ribbon is orange striped with blue, black and white.
