Carter Braine's modification of Junker's anaesthesia apparatus
Carter Braine's modification of a Junker type apparatus for chloroform anaesthesia, using a Tyrell's face mask, English, 1892-1930
Charles Carter Braine (1859-1937), an anaesthetist at a number of London hospitals, described his modification to a popular design developed by F E Junker. Instead of a straightsided tube, this example has an hour-glass shape, to prevent liquid chloroform entering the out tubing, even when tilted. The Junker inhaler pushed air over liquid anaesthetic by hand-pumped bellows, also known as 'bubble through' technique.
The face mask was designed by Walter Tyrrell (1852-1931), an anaesthetist at Thomas's Hospital. A flannel is stretched over a wire frame.
