Murray mask for "open" chloroform anaesthesia, with flannel cover, 1870-1920
In 1868, John Murray (1843-1873), introduced this wire frame mask with a flannel covering stitched in place. Murray, like many of those specialising in anaesthesia developed his own designs and practices.
Liquid chloroform would be dropped onto the mask and the resulting vapours inhaled. This method was known as 'open' anaesthesia.
