"Fluotec 3" vaporizer, by Cyprane, 1979
A vaporiser is used to convert anaesthetic liquids into gases, that can then be breathed in by the patient. The Flutec 3 was designed specifically for an anaesthetic gas called halothane, also known by the brand name Fluothane.
As a chemist at Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI), Charles W Suckling (1920-2013) developed halothane - one of the first synthetic, non-explosive liquid anaesthetics. The results of his work were published in 1951 and was used in clinical practice from 1956 onwards.
