Ivory anatomical figure, a pregnant female, with some removable internal organs, lying on wooden and cloth bed with ivory pillow, possibly 18th century
This ivory figure of a pregnant female is lying on a wood and cloth bed and has an ivory pillow under its head. The figure has some removable organs. This type of figure was probably used to instruct lay people about basic human anatomy, particularly related to pregnancy, and male figures were also produced. It is unlikely that these figures would have been used to instruct medical students or midwives due to the inadequate anatomical detail.
